How Deep Can a Human Dive
An untrained person diving on a single breath is doing something risky below a few metres. A trained scuba diver on air is limited to roughly 30 to 40 metres by narcosis and gas toxicity. Beyond that requires mixed gases, decompression stops and years of training. The deepest scuba dive on record, by Ahmed Gabr in 2014, reached 332.35 metres — and it took years of preparation and a large support team. None of this is a target. It is a description of a hostile environment. I teach swimming, not diving, and I write this because pool swimmers ask about it constantly, usually after watching a freediving video. The honest answer is that depth is not a test of courage. It is a physics problem that your body loses.

Why depth is the problem

Every ten metres of seawater adds roughly one more atmosphere of pressure. At 10m you are at twice surface pressure; at 30m, four times. Three things follow from that, and all three can kill you. Gas compresses. The air in your lungs, sinuses and middle ear shrinks as you descend, and expands as you ascend. Fail to equalise and you damage your ears. Ascend while holding a breath from a compressed-air supply and the expanding air can rupture lung tissue. Gas dissolves. Under pressure, nitrogen dissolves into your blood and tissues. Come up too fast and it comes out of solution as bubbles — decompression sickness. It causes joint pain, neurological damage, and it can be fatal. Gas becomes toxic. Nitrogen at depth produces narcosis: a drunken, overconfident state that arrives without you noticing, which is precisely what makes it dangerous. Oxygen, which keeps you alive at the surface, becomes toxic at high partial pressures and can cause seizures underwater.

Recreational depth limits are set by training agencies and vary; check with your certifying agency rather than a blog. The point of the table is the shape of the curve, not the numbers.

The danger closest to home: shallow-water blackout

This is the one that affects ordinary swimmers, and it does not require a wetsuit or the sea. It happens in swimming pools, in a metre and a half of water, to fit young people. Your urge to breathe is triggered by rising carbon dioxide, not by falling oxygen. If you hyperventilate before going under — several fast, deep breaths — you blow off carbon dioxide and delay the urge to breathe. Your oxygen has not increased. You simply removed the alarm. You then swim underwater feeling fine, right up until your brain runs out of oxygen, and you lose consciousness with no warning, no thrashing and no sound. A person in shallow-water blackout sinks quietly. Lifeguards miss it because there is nothing to see. Every year it kills strong swimmers, including trained military personnel. So: never hyperventilate before breath-holding. Never practise breath-holding or underwater distance alone. Never make it a competition. If you must do any underwater work, have a dedicated observer at the surface whose only job is to watch you, and never extend the time or distance. There is no training benefit worth this.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a personal-best breath-hold as a milestone. It is a hazard, not an achievement.
  • Hyperventilating before diving down. This is the mechanism of blackout, not a preparation for it.
  • Learning to freedive from videos. Freedivers train with safety divers and strict protocols. The videos leave that out.
  • Descending fast without equalising. Ear and sinus injuries are common, permanent and avoidable.
  • Ascending quickly from a scuba dive. Controlled ascents and safety stops exist for a reason.
  • Diving after alcohol. Never. It worsens narcosis, judgement and dehydration all at once.
  • Diving with a cold. You cannot equalise, and forcing it damages your ears.

If depth genuinely interests you

Get trained. Properly, through a recognised agency, with an instructor on your shoulder. SSI and equivalent bodies run structured pathways that start in a swimming pool and add depth only when the skills are automatic. Before any of that, you need to be a genuinely competent swimmer: comfortable in deep water, able to tread water for several minutes, able to recover from being disoriented.
